We see the world in three dimensions because our eyes perceive objects from two different angles. To prove this theory, 180 years ago, English scientist Charles Wheatstone invented not only the well-known stereoscope, but also the much rarer pseudoscope. This device swaps the two images perceived by the eyes, thereby reversing our perception of depth: nearby objects appear distant, and distant objects appear close. You have to see it to believe it!

Wheatstone’s first pseudoscope used prisms to deflect light. The AstroMedia pseudoscope is equipped with mirrors that swap the two images perceived by the eyes. It also features an innovation that no other pseudoscope had yet offered: the two large mirrors can rotate on axes, allowing the focus to be adjusted for objects at different distances.

You will need the following for assembly:

• Standard universal solvent-based glue. Do not use water-based glue: it softens and warps the cardboard and does not adhere properly to printed surfaces. Solvent-based glues also dry much faster.
• Double-sided adhesive tape for mirrors. Some glues can damage their reflective coating!
